Representatives of PAE and representatives from various ministries visited the borders of Beitbridge (Zimbabwe/South Africa) and Khazunluga (Zambia/Zimbabwe) to learn about recently implemented modernised border posts in the region.
The visit took place between April 17 and 19, aimed to analyse the management model of both border posts with a view to developing a project and examining the practices used in mobilising resources for the construction of these infrastructures.
One of the activities planned under Measure 11 of the PAE is to promote the modernization of borders in Mozambique, and during the visit, the group of representatives from the Government of Mozambique was able to observe some of the advantages generated by modernization, such as the simplification of procedures due to the management systems used – which ensure no human interference in the flow of vehicles -, a significant increase in customs revenue, border fees and migration fees, and a reduction in customs smuggling.
The reduction in waiting time for trucks resulted in a significant increase in the flow of trucks, benefiting international trade as the main result.
The group that made the visit was composed of the PAE team, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Defense, the National Inspection Institute for Fisheries, the Tax Authority, the National Migration Service, the National Road Administration, and the Southern African Trade Connectivity Project Implementation Unit.
